Course Goals: The 12th grade English curriculum is designed to develop the student’s ability to read critically, write clearly, and speak comfortably in front of a group. A major portion of the course will involve reading, thematic analysis, discussion, and writing. In this course, seniors will:
• Examine and respond to world history through literature.
• Read, think, discuss, and write critically in response to world literature.
• Write from experience, analysis, and research in a variety of forms.
• Understand, recognize, and apply literary terms.
• Read, discuss and critique a variety of literature such as: Beowulf, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Night by Elie Wiesel. We will also have the benefit of selected excerpts from the literature text.
• Reflect on the themes of the course: truth, free will, determinism, integrity, hypocrisy, priorities, destiny, heroism, love, honor, belief, friendship, mortality, values, reason, emotion, and heroic quest.
• Write a term paper. For a source to be considered as having been used, the student must have cited information within the paper itself from that source. Simply mentioning a source on the Works Cited page does not count as having used that source. The term paper is done is stages, each of which has to be completed before the student will be allowed to move to the next step. Any student who does not complete each step will fail the term paper. The steps are as follows:
o turning in three possible term paper topics
o turning in term paper thesis statement
o turning in term paper full thesis (thesis statement plus list of pro points and list of con points)
o turning in term paper note cards plus either originals or copies of all sources
o turning in term paper outline
o turning in term paper rough draft along with either originals or copies of all sources
o turning in term paper final copy along with either originals or copies of all sources
The purpose of dividing the term paper into these stages is three-fold: first, the students take the paper step-by-step, learning research methods and organizational methods which they will use in other high school classes as well as in college; second, it is impossible for students to procrastinate until the last minute to do the paper; and third, students are far less likely to try to plagiarize and/or use an old term paper or an “on-line” term paper rather than writing the paper themselves since the teacher supervises each step and basically watches the paper develop.
• Write college applications/scholarship essays
• Write a resume
• Write a cover letter to accompany the resume
• Students will give a variety of speeches including some of the following:
o Introducing a fellow student
o Impromptu speaking
o Persuasive speaking
o Extemporaneous speaking
Student Expectations: Students are expected to come to class on time with the appropriate materials: the book(s) we are using, notebook, note paper, folder, writing utensil, planner, and homework. In addition to the assigned reading, students are also expected to maintain a regular independent reading life. We will devote class reading time to independent reading each end-of-the-week day. Students should use an appropriate note-taking-for-learning strategy on a daily basis. All papers should be the student’s original and ‘best’ work, and should be turned in on time. Papers should go through the drafting, review, revision, and editing processes. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Document all sources.
Important Information:
• No daily work will be accepted late.
• If you forget a textbook, homework assignment, etc., in your locker and don’t make it back to your seat before the bell rings, you will receive a tardy.
• YOU are responsible for making up work if you are absent.
• Do NOT hand in make-up work if I am absent and a substitute is teaching the class.
